I Used to Get High

John Bulter Trio is coming to Montreal and Toronto in early February. Get tickets if you can. However, most of their North American tour is already sold out.

There are many socially conscious musicians on the scene these days.

K’naan. Natalie Merchant. Ben Harper. M.I.A. Manu Chou.

John Butler Trio is up there with the best of them. Songs like Better Than, Used To Get High, Gov Did Nothing and Oceans are not just groovey but pack a political punch.

Played live, most of the songs are super danceable jams, averaging eight minutes long.

From the available footage on Youtube and iTunes, John Butler Trio pays respect to the local Aboriginal peoples during a live show. He isn’t preachy about it. Just respectful about them predating us on the space that he is singing.

I was very fortunate to see the band play a few hours outside of Perth, coincidently his home town. The show safely ranks in one of the top ten I’ve ever seen. Also because – as stated in a previous blog post – I had been learning a great deal of Australian history.

I can’t help myself sometimes, separating a message from its medium. Music is so nourishing for the soul.

If you’ve been to a Timeraiser, you’ve certainly seen and heard how our music selection that covers a lot of economic, social, and environmental cords. We are excited to add John Bulter Trio to the playlist.
